The tool is engineered to handle aluminium and copper cables up to 30mm diameter, accommodating an additional messenger wire up to 6mm (1800 N/mm²) when present. The cutters feature specially designed notches on the blades for cutting ferrous materials, preserving the sharpened cutting edges for their primary purpose. To maximise service life, the main sharpened blade sections should only be used on non-ferrous materials such as aluminium and copper, with the notches employed when ferrous material needs to be cut.
